Introduction
Now here is a topic that many educators may not feel comfortable addressing in the classroom. But the expression "sex sells," is certainly one that many advertisers believe in. Many will agree that messages about sex found in the media certainly communicate and educate audiences. But what exactly are students taking from this message? Is the message always correct? And is anything important left out of the message? Sexually loaded media is, unfortunately, a fact of life. The solution then is to instill them with the knowledge they need to make the right decisions and protect themselves.

I just got done writing a book on the Magdalene Laundries and the first of these institutions were for retired prostitutes in order to help them transition into society. What I have found is that our society (western society) has a love and hate relationship with prostitutes. When there the economy is bad and men cannot afford to marry early, prostitution is often promoted. There were lots of ads in English papers in the late 1800s where different prostitutes were "reviewed" like we might review a product. Indeed there was someone who was reviewing prostitutes on YouTube for a while.
ReplyDeleteMy question to you is this: what will we gain by legalizing prostitution and do you think it will every happen here in the US?
I would like to see what you can come up with on this. When I was living in Korea with the military a few years back I became aware of the gravity of the world sex trade and how any business that is run in the margins of legality can create a horrible life for anyone who is on the wrong end of it. Long story short, this topic is a volcano that is ready to burst, if you'll excuse the innuendo.
ReplyDeleteChase is right. With my studies on prostitution, I have found that whenever it is totally shunned or made illegal totally, the worse the crime, slave conditions and loss of personal power for women. When prostitution is regulated and legal, women have more power to stay, to go, to stay safe and so on. it is a very powerful topic.
